The term 'Blue Carbon' was first coined in 2009 to focus on the potential for the conservation and restoration of coastal ecosystems to contribute to the mitigation of GHG emissions and the promotion of climate change adaptation.
Since then, the international scientific community increasingly recognise the role of marine ecosystems in climate change mitigation and the concept of Blue Carbon has sparked multi-disciplinary collaboration and research; crossing biogeochemical and physical sciences, socio-economics, conservation and policy.
However, with that, definitions of Blue Carbon have been diverging and there is growing confusion and misunderstanding of what Blue Carbon is. Lisa Benson is a senior marine scientist at Cefas specialising in nature-based solutions to climate change, and in this presentation she will explore the current definitions of Blue Carbon and what they mean in the context of climate change mitigation and for actionable Blue Carbon projects.
The seminar will be of interest for anyone with interests in applications for integrating marine ecosystem management into development planning for environmental and climate impacts mitigation.

Lisa Benson is a Senior Marine Scientist, specialising in nature-based solutions to climate change, at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas), UK. Lisa’s research focuses on the dynamics of carbon storage in coastal habitats and the role that these ecosystems can play in mitigating climate change. Lisa’s work spans from international government climate change targets to community-led marine management, to which the carbon stored in these systems may be used to catalyse action.
