Event description

This presentation will review current approaches to modelling climate risks for UK water companies, including an overview of stochastic data sets and UK Climate Projections 2018. It will cover the development of stochastic data sets, the bias correction of climate change models and focus on key parts of the modelling chain from climate models to assessments of Deployable Outputs.

Taking a step back from the complexity of modelling, it will consider the rationale for different modelling approaches and key considerations for robust risk assessment and how this can achieve the right outcomes for maintaining water supplies and enhancing environmental flows.

Delegates will be introduced to water resources modelling, how to apply stochastic and climate change data and a perspective of the most important uncertainties. The talk will be aimed at both those new to climate modelling of hydrological risks as well as those involved in the current round of water resources plans..

About the speaker

Steven Wade

Steven Wade is Associate Director for Climate Resilience at Atkins and previously led consultancy teams at HR Wallingford and the Met Office. He provides advice on water resources and climate resilience in the water, energy and transport sectors globally, with experience of working in Africa, the Middle East and Asia and is the technical lead for Weather and Climate Services at Atkins.

Since the Periodic Review in 1999, Steven has worked on the impacts of climate change on UK water resources, often developing new risk assessment approaches for UKWIR and the Environment Agency; he has experienced the huge growth in climate impacts, hydrological and water resources systems modelling from the development of the first systems models and application of a handful of climate scenarios in the South East of England to the current efforts to model tens of thousands of current and future scenarios through large numbers of models. Steven recently completed the Regional Climate Data Tools project to develop data sets for regional water resources planning in England and Wales.
