Hosted by ICE Northern Ireland and the CIWEM Northern Ireland branch
Event description
Join us for an exciting event exploring the Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation Scheme, a major infrastructure investment in Belfast City Centre by the Department for Infrastructure. This session will explore the need for the scheme, the concept design approach, and the detailed design and construction of the circa 8km flood defence through Belfast City.
Owen McGivern, head of rivers development for DFI, will start by discussing the flood risk impacts to the city centre and the effect of climate change on flood risk estimations which raised the need for a feasibility study and ultimately set the requirements for the scheme.
Then, Julie Templeton, concept design stage project manager with AtkinsRéalis, will briefly describe the feasibility stage approach and the key decisions made to develop the concept design for the tidal defence.
We will then hear from Patrick Harney, director at Charles Brand, who will describe the contractors’ challenges with detailed design and construction methodologies of this significant scheme through the industrial port, commercial city centre and urban residential areas of Belfast.
We welcome members and non-members of ICE and CIWEM to attend this webinar.
Part of the CIWEM Flood Resilience and Adaption series.
