Hosted by the CIWEM East Midlands branch and the CIWEM West Midlands branch

The CIWEM West Midlands and East Midlands branches will be holding their annual joint Dr Jenkins best technical paper competition 2024.

The event provides an opportunity for new and prospective members of CIWEM to present papers on any topic in the field of water and environmental management.

This event will be in person. A buffet will be available on the evening, with plenty of opportunities to network with friends and colleagues during the event.

We welcome CIWEM members and non-members to support the finalists.

About the judges

Hannah Burgess

Hannah Burgess has worked in the Water and Environmental sector for over 20 years and is CIWEM’s President Elect. She is a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager and a Fellow of CIWEM and specialises in flood and coastal management and stakeholder engagement. Hannah is a CIWEM Trustee, the former Chair of the CIWEM West Midlands Branch and Rivers and Coastal Group and a founding member of the Women in Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management initiative . As a day job, Hannah heads up the Binnies Birmingham office and Binnies flood and coastal consultancy services in the Midlands and Scotland.

Alastair Moseley

Alastair Moseley is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Water and Environmental Manager and his career spans more than forty years in civil engineering, water and environmental management. He is a Fellow of CIWEM and his experience includes holding senior director roles with leading UK and international consultancies, running his own consultancy practice, H2O WEM Ltd, and directing UK Trade Associations and professional institutions including CIWEM, Future Water Association and the Environmental Industries Commission.

He was CIWEM’s National President in 2008/9 and is now an Honorary Vice president and spokesperson for the Institution. Amongst his current roles he is CIWEM Professional Development Lead for the Severn Trent Academy, Technical Expert to the Systra-Mott MacDonald DJV for the river diversions required for the new HS2 Railway, and Water Technical Advisor to the Government Department for Business and Trade.

Paul Hurcombe

Paul Hurcombe has over 30 years’ experience in drainage and has been working for Severn Trent for the last 25 years. Paul manages the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) team, and in March 2023 successfully delivered their first ever DWMP which was used to evidence Severn Trent’s PR24 Business Plan.

About the venue and getting there

The event will take place at the WSP Offices at The Mailbox, Wharfside Street, Birmingham, B1 1RQ. Birmingham railway and bus stations are within easy walking distance and there are several bus routes that run near the offices for those travelling by bus.

Birmingham New Street station is 5 minute walk away. Exit Birmingham New Street Station via “B” end of platform and Navigation Street or Hill Street exit.

By Bus

Closest bus stop is Navigation Street.

By foot

A short walk from Birmingham New Street. Enter through the front of The Mailbox, up the escalator to the first floor.

By car

If you are coming by car, please consider sharing the journey with others to reduce your environmental footprint. Closest car park is the Q-Park Mailbox on Royal Mail Street.
