This lunch time Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) meeting will focus on the part both CIWEM and the Institution of Civil Engineers have played in the career of Paul Hillman (Hon Vice President. CIWEM) and Darren Lumbroso (Technical Director at HR Wallingford) and the benefits of joining professional institutions.
Paul Hillman (Hon Vice President, CIWEM)
Paul’s career spanned a short period in the merchant navy followed by construction, design and research including assignments for the World Health Organisation in the Middle East.His interests include public health, hydrology, water resources, and environmental assessment and management.His most recent involvement with construction was as the environmental adviser for the FCBC consortium on the construction of the Queensferry Crossing, the cable stayed bridge over the Forth estuary.

From Concorde to David Bowie – The part the Institution of Civil Engineers and Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management have played in my career
Darren Lumbroso is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Member of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. Over the course of his 25 year career, he has worked for voluntary, private sector and research organisations in over 30 countries worldwide, mainly in the fields of flood risk management, water resources management and climate change adaptation. Darren has also worked on the construction of the 185 m high Katse dam in Lesotho and small-scale water supply schemes in Zimbabwe. In this talk, he will reflect on the part professional institutions have played in his career and explain how having started his education struggling to design the next Concorde, he now believes that his approach to work can be summed up by a David Bowie quote.
