Event description

Current global environmental change presents significant and immediate challenges that require substantial adaptation if we are to ensure the resilience of the systems upon which humans and the natural environment rely. These systems include our water management systems that provide critical services, such as clean drinking water, treated wastewater, and flood management.

Resilience results from adaptations that are required at the scale of incremental adjustments through to transformative action. In seeking these solutions a means of valuing natural adaptations is seen as important, with natural capital accounting a cornerstone of seeking these innovations in a suitable and ecosystem services-base manner.

This multidisciplinary event is an opportunity to bring together regulators, industry and researchers to explore and discuss innovation-based solutions to greater resilience of our water systems.

Themes to be explored by our speakers will be:

  • Balancing our water resources across the country whilst supporting and restoring biodiversity.
  • Exploring the challenges arising because of climatic change in water resources and flood management.
  • Supporting decision making with ecosystem services approaches.
  • What policy shifts are needed to deliver resilience, is society ready to adopt locally derived resilience approaches?
  • Use of ecosystem services and natural capital accounting.

This event brings together the Presidents of CIWEM and Engineers Ireland and an invited panel of experts. The current President of CIWEM is Hannah Burgess and the Presidential theme for 2024-2025 is one of adaptation and resilience at pace given our rapidly changing climate.

Part of the CIWEM Flood Resilience and Adaption series.
