Hosted by the CIWEM South Eastern branch
Event description
An afternoon webinar by Dr Richard Charman showcasing the Environment Agency’s Estuary Edges project.
Increasing the margins of mudflat, reedbed and saltmarsh along the edges of hardened, urbanised estuaries has a positive ecological impact on plants, invertebrates, fish and birds. In the case study estuary, the Tidal Thames, South East UK, there has been a loss of 10,000 hectares of saltmarsh since 1860 (Environment Agency, 2016). A greener estuary also has positive impacts on mental health.
Dr Richard Charman from the Environment Agency will explain why this softening is so vital and the variety of methods employed in the Tidal Thames, which range from small managed realignments, constructed terraces and timbers bolted onto walls. He will talk through the results of the recent sampling data and explain how this information has been combined together to form a new ‘how to guide’ web site aimed at developers and launched in summer 2019.
