Event description

Our speaker, Dr Dominic Hames, principal engineer at HR Wallingford, will look at the effect of the collection, processing and analysis of sea level data for use in extreme sea level predictions. Dominic will consider factors of how predictions change with time as we go through periods of few and many extreme events, as well as the effect of missing and “incorrect” data.

The talk will primarily focus on data from the Humber Estuary, but will include references to data from other locations where applicable.

This webinar is open to everyone but would be of interest particularly to those who enjoy coastal science, extremes, statistics and data processing.

Part of the CIWEM Land & Water Management digital series.

About the speaker

Dr Dominic Hames

Dr Dominic Hames is a principal engineer within the Floods and Water group at HR Wallingford, and a visiting lecturer in the area of flood risk management at the Universities of Brunel, East London and IHE Delft in the Netherlands. He has over 30 years of experience in flood and coastal defence related work both within the consultant and academic sector, and has won the ICE Halcrow Prize for the last two years, and is also a past joint winner of the ICE Bill Curtin Medal.

His main interests are in the evolution of coastal engineering subjects looking at reasons why methods, analysis, techniques and results change, why they don’t (when they should) as well as the effect of data quality on the quality of output. Currently his interest is looking at the spatial effect of climate change on the overtopping performance of coastal defences.
