Event description

A live panel discussion, where each of our invited speakers will reflect the approaches they and their organisations are taking to manage flood risk, including:

  • Highlighting the roles and responsibilities of different organisations for flood management;
  • Presenting local project case studies and key lessons learnt; and
  • Discussing the opportunities for innovation to address the increasing flood risk from climate change, whilst seeking wider benefits for local communities and the environment.

This will be followed by a facilitated Q&A session and drinks at the Birmingham Christmas Market.

About the chair and speakers

Chair

Hannah Coogan

Hannah Coogan is the immediate past chair of the CIWEM West Midlands branch and is the regional delivery director for Binnies in the Midlands.

Panellists

Dean Ward | Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council
Dean Ward is a chartered member of CIWEM and has worked in the flood risk and drainage sector for 15 years, leading teams of staff in the planning and design of flood alleviation schemes, SuDS drainage and river restoration. Now working for Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, his focus is on property flood resilience and how we respond and manage flood events at a local scale

Mary Dhonau | Mary Dhonau Associates (MDA)
Mary Dhonau is a specialist property flood resilience expert working to raise local flood awareness by planning for flooding and advising on Property Flood Resilience (PFR). Sometimes known as Flood Mary, she wrote the Property Flood Resilience 2020 publication outlining inspirational case studies about homeowners and business who have made adaptations to enable them to recover more quickly after a flood, or because of the moves they have taken, they have not flooded at all!

Pete Lambert | Head of Land & Water Shropshire Wildlife Trust
Pete Lambert is head of land and water at Shropshire Wildlife Trust and has been involved in nature conservation for nearly 30 years. The land and water team run catchment scale projects with many partners across Shropshire and Telford. Their aim is to drive forward natures recovery, raise water quality standards, build resilience into the natural environment in regard to water quantity and promote habitat creation to reverse wildlife decline.

Pete previously ran a coppice craft skills centre in Kent providing work skills for adults with additional needs and was for many years a freelance woodsman practising heritage crafts and supporting woodland management and traditional rural skills.

Travelling to the venue

As part of CIWEM's commitment to tackling the climate and ecological emergency we would encourage delegates to use the most sustainable means of transport possible.

Access to the venue

If coming from Birmingham New Street Station, delegates should be advised to walk towards the Mailbox and enter via the front of the Mailbox, go up the escalators and walk 200m. In front of you there will be the WSP Mailbox entrance. Delegates should collect their visitors pass and take the lift to floor 7 where the event is being held.
