Hosted by the CIWEM West Midlands branch
Event description
A lunchtime webinar looking at the role food waste biodigestion plays in the circular economy.
Currently in the UK, we throw away around 9.5 million tonnes of food every year. This puts pressure on the environment by creating excess need for food as well as managing the need to dispose of food waste without where possible diverting it to landfill sites.
Action can be taken to reduce food waste at production, supply and consumption stage and also by recycling the waste that is leftover. One person’s waste is another person’s treasure and in a circular economy approach, the unavoidable food waste is recycled through the system into something new, which gets further recycled/ reused in the future to create something else and the cycle goes on. This contributes to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 12, which is to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
Join the West Midlands Branch webinar on the 10th June and hear more from Severn Trent and Marches Biogas about:
- The circular economy approach to managing food waste
- An introduction to the Food Waste Anaerobic Digestion process, how it works and what products it produces
- How the sector contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and
- What the future may hold
This talk is timely in relation to the climate and ecological emergency we face with regards to not only mitigating the impact of how we manage waste on climate change but also reducing the ecological impact of that waste on the environment.
