Event description

The CIWEM North Western & North Wales branch is delighted to be partnering with Jacobs for their Glyn Ellis Prize Early Professionals paper competition 2023.

This competition challenges early career professionals in our region to submit a paper on a subject related to water or the environment, finalists will present their work to a our judging panel.

We are pleased to announce that John Curtin, Executive Director of Local Operations at the Environment Agency will be our keynote speaker at the evening, as well as being on the judging panel. Fellow judges are our Junior President, Emily Shipton, Ammar Ahmad, Chair of the CIWEM North Western and North Wales branch, Alex Powell of Binnies and the branch Honorary Secretary and organiser of the event, Rob Van.

Prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening to the best entries.

A buffet dinner with refreshments will also be provided, though we ask attendees to notify us in advance of any special access needs or dietary requirements.

About the venue and getting there

The event will take place at Jacobs’ Manchester First Street Office, 5 First St, Manchester M15 4GU. Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Victoria and Manchester Oxford Road railway stations are all within in easy walking distance of the venue. Several Metrolink tram and train services run from these mainline stations to Deansgate-Castleford station, which is the nearest station.

Travelling to the venue

As part of CIWEM’s commitment to tackling the climate and ecological emergency we would encourage delegates to use the most environmentally sustainable means of transport possible.

By Train

Avanti West Coast, Cross-Country, East Midlands Railways, Northern Trains, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales trains all go to three of the major Manchester railway stations for those coming from outside Manchester.

Manchester Oxford Road railway station is the nearest major railway station and is located at Greater, Station Approach, Oxford Rd, Manchester M1 6FU.

Manchester Piccadilly railway station is located at Piccadilly Station Approach, Greater, Manchester M60 7RA and Manchester Victoria railway station is situated in Victoria Station Approach, Manchester M3 1WY.

Trams run from all three railway stations, as well as some of the mainline trains, to Deansgate-Castleford Metrolink station, which is the closest station to the venue.

By Tram

Deansgate – Castlefield Metrolink station is located at Deansgate, Manchester M3 4LG. Purple and Blue line trams run from Manchester Piccadilly Metrolink station and Green, Navy and Pink Lines trams run from Manchester Metrolink Victoria station. Trams take 12 – 17 minutes to reach Deansgate-Castleford respectively.

By Bus | Coach

101 and 103 bus routes are run only a short distance from the venue.

By foot | cycle

The Jacob offices are only 8, 17 and 22 minutes’ walk respectively from Manchester Oxford Road, Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria railway stations and 5 – 6 minutes’ walk or 2 minutes’ cycle ride from Deansgate-Castleford Metrolink station.

By car
