This course explores coastal engineering design, including criteria, calculations and conceptual design. It will introduce the standards used to select design criteria, including loads, risk and lifetime considerations.

Is this course for you?

This course is delivered in the context of applying technical approaches, to enable coastal asset owners and planners to review coastal engineering reports and perform simple checks to verify design parameters.

What's covered?

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Types of coastal structures in use
  • Coastal processes leading to a coastal risk and how these are mitigated
  • Design criteria, standards and best-practice guidance used in the UK
  • Basic design calculations including wave height, overtopping and loads
  • Levels of confidence for analytical, numerical and physical modelling calculations.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and attendance will contribute toward your continuing professional development (CPD).

  • Graham Kenn BSc MSc CEng MICE CEnv MCIWEM C.WEM
Graham is a chartered civil engineer with over twenty years’ consultancy experience and has worked on the detailed design, options appraisal and strategy development for numerous coastal and maritime schemes around the UK, working for clients including the MoD, EDF Energy, local authorities, the RNLI, the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and Network Rail. Graham has extensive coastal and maritime engineering design experience and has developed detailed designs for sea walls, quay walls, rock armour revetments, breakwaters, causeways, beach control structures and tidal defence walls. He co-delivers the Lancaster University and JBA PgCert course on coastal erosion and flood risk management.
  • Alec Dane BSc (Hons) MSc CEng MICE
Alec is a chartered civil engineer and project manager with over six years’ experience in the field of coastal engineering. Alec has extensive design and project management experience in a wide range of flood and coastal defence structures, including sea walls, revetments, flood walls, quay walls, breakwaters and beach recharge schemes. These skills cover the suite of design stages from options appraisal, outline and detailed design, through to construction. He is also one of the lecturers on the Lancaster University and JBA PgCert course on coastal erosion and flood risk management.
