Designed to provide you with a greater awareness of both the theoretical and practical aspects of Flood Risk Asset Inspections. This course introduces you to the Visual Asset Inspection process and a range of asset types and elements. You will learn how to navigate the Condition Assessment Manual and how to calculate condition grades. The theoretical training day will cover both fluvial and coastal assets, along with culvert inspection.

  • The course is aimed at individuals/organisations looking to undertake inspections on their Flood Risk Assets in accordance with the Environment Agency’s Condition Assessment Manual.

What's covered?

Day 1 - Theory - During this session you will:

  • Learn about the asset condition grading process using the manual
  • Identify a range of asset types and elements
  • Calculate condition grades
  • Recognise process issues and appreciate how to resolve them
  • Complete a 1 hour written test.

Day 2 - Site visit - During this session you will:

  • Visit a range of different asset types with our accredited inspector and begin to apply the knowledge gained on day 1 to identify asset types and elements to calculate condition grades.

Following the site visit you will need to submit 20 inspection logs. Our assessor will accredit you following successful submission.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and attendance will contribute toward your continuing professional development (CPD).

Meet the course presenter:

Alex McDonald MSc Bsc


Alex has over 2 years of experience within flood risk. He has dealt with small scale river-based modelling using software such as; Flood Modeller, TUFLOW and HEC-RAS on several projects, looking at both small scale detailed modelling for specific sites as well as larger scale modelling looking at catchment scale models. Alex also has experience in using GIS to understand mechanisms of flooding, assisting with GIS aspects of Strategic Flood Risk Assessments by post-processing outputs of 1D-2D FM-TUFLOW models.

Craig Lucas HNC BTEC NVQs levels 2 and 3


Craig has worked on a vast number of projects including Property Level Protection Schemes, Strategic Flood Risk Assessments and a number of Asset Inspection projects. Craig has gained a lot of experience in asset inspecting, completing over 250 confined space inspections and over 1500 Flood Risk Asset inspections. Since joining JBA Craig has trained in GIS, AutoCAD, GISmapp, Gismo and is also a fully accredited T98 asset inspector and a T98 Training Accreditor.

Mark Tywang BSc


Mark has 22 years’ experience working in various areas of the water, environmental and engineering industry. River monitoring and data collection with the Environment Agency’s North East Region Field Monitoring and Data team. Organic and Inorganic analysis and water quality sampling of ground water at the Environment Agency’s (EA) National Laboratory Service.

Mark has been involved in several flood mapping studies for the EA, lead local flood authorities and borough councils, including Scarborough, Redcar, Stockton, Cumbria, Wigan, North Yorkshire, Isle of Man and Nottinghamshire. He has experience of Strategic Flood Risk Mapping (SFRM) work; South Ulverston, Hellifield, Tyne and Ouse. Additionally, he has experience of working on Hazard Mapping Studies; Salford and Pyle (Natural Resources Wales), Pre-feasibility studies; Newthorpe, Colne and Holme, Flood Zone Improvement studies (EA's North West Region, North Area). Flood Alleviation Schemes (Wigton, Flosh Beck – North west region).
