If you need to develop an understanding of the various different types of river model in use in the UK, this course is a great option. You’ll gain insights and hands-on experience in identifying the best type of model for the outcome you're looking for (whether that’s for flood warning, flood risk mapping, broad scale investigations, flood mitigation and scheme design etc).

Is this course for you?

We’ve pitched this course at managers and other professionals who want to understand how river models work and how they can be used, without getting bogged down in the underlying hydraulics and detailed software concepts.

What's covered?

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the different strengths of each type of model and to choose the most appropriate modelling approach for a specific purpose and scenario
  • Determine which commercial software packages are best suited to a specific scenario
  • Confidently produce an outline specification for a river model, and set out good practices expected for the model build and review process.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and attendance will contribute toward your continuing professional development (CPD)

Meet the course presenters:

Ella Albrighton BSc

Ella joined JBA on the graduate scheme following the completion of her degree in Geography and Natural Hazard at Coventry University. As part of her degree, Ella undertook a 15-month placement with JBA in the Coleshill office. Ella has experience in using several modelling software packages such as Flood Modeller and TUFLOW/ESTRY. Ella has over 5 years of experience in hydraulic modelling (both building and reviewing models), Flood Risk Assessments and GIS.

Emelie Persson PgCert BSc

Emelie joined JBA in 2021 after completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Flood and Coastal Risk Management at Lancaster University. Previous to this she obtained a BSc in Environmental Science at Lund University, Sweden. Her interest in hydrology and hydraulic modelling was initially developed whilst taking a module in sustainable water management during an exchange semester at Melbourne University, Australia. During her postgraduate studies, she gained valuable skills in flow gauging data collection, experience of carrying out river habitat surveys, and she was also introduced to ArcGIS, QGIS and hydraulic modelling software such as TUFLOW and HEC-RAS. During her time with JBA, Emelie has been involved in a large number of private and public sector studies developing 1D-2D hydraulic models using Flood Modeller-TUFLOW or ESTRY-TUFLOW to estimate the flood risk to a site or an area.
