You will receive practical advice on preparing, planning, managing and carrying out surveys for 1D and 2D river models. The course aims to inform modellers and managers how they can prepare for and manage a survey and ensure the deliverables content and quality is what they expected. The course does not cover survey principles.

Meet the course team

Robbie Cowan BSc MCInstCES MRICS


Robbie is a chartered land surveyor with 28 years’ professional experience of survey work. This has involved a range of project types, including land-use, topographic, hydrographic and measured building survey.

Robbie is the Chief Land Surveyor of JBA and heads an in-house team of surveyors and survey assistants. He also has responsibility for all survey procurement for JBA and on behalf of our clients, and is in charge of survey quality control, survey health & safety and survey training. He has developed survey specifications for internal use as well as external clients. In particular, the Office of Public Works CFRAM Survey for River Models series of contacts (overall value in excess of €5million). He has worked throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland and has completed overseas assignments in Germany, France, Nigeria and Kuwait.

He managed three separate campaigns (2012, 2015 and 2018) covering the UK and Ireland regions of a pan European Land Use and Land Cover survey commissioned by Eurostat. Robbie has been an active member of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) since becoming a member in 2002. He was immediately appointed to the Scottish regional committee where he was involved for over 15 years. In 2009 he was appointed regional Chairman, for a period of two years. In 2010 Robbie was elected to sit on the RICS Professional Group Board Rural and Geomatics in Scotland where he sat as Chair (Geomatics) for 5 years. Robbie was elected to sit on the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors Council of Management in 2011 and sat on this committee until 2016.
