About the speaker

Dr Alice Horton

Dr Alice Horton is principal investigator – Anthropogenic Contaminants at the National Oceanography Centre. Her expertise lies in the interactions and effects of microplastics on organisms within aquatic environments. In order to understand how and why organisms will come into contact with microplastics she is also researching how the connections between land, lakes, rivers and the sea lead to the input, transport and accumulation of microplastics within the environment.

She has published studies identifying microplastics in UK rivers including the River Thames and has led experimental studies on the effects of microplastics on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, alone and in combination with persistent organic chemicals. Additional research includes quantifying microplastics in wastewater and potable water products in collaboration with UKWIR.

Dr Horton sits on the advisory panels of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) Wastewater and Biosolids specialist panel and the Foundation for Water Research (FWR) Innovation Forum, and regularly advises the Environment Agency and Defra on issues relating to microplastics. She also leads the UK Microplastics Network (https://ukcpn.co.uk/uk-microplastics-network/), working closely to integrate academic research with industry, policy and business to more efficiently address the variety of issues surrounding microplastics.
