Event description

The CIWEM Rivers and Coastal Group is running a series of ‘bitesize’ webinars in 2021. We will be covering a variety of topics and ideas which support the CIWEM competencies for those looking towards getting Chartered.

The first of the series is on the Brumadinho dam in Brazil. On the 25 January 2019 the Brumadinho tailings dam suddenly failed, releasing a mudflow of around 10million m3 mining waste that killed between 270 and 320 people.

This webinar, presented by Darren Lumbroso and Mark Davison of HR Wallingford, describes the mudflow modelling of the dam failure and use of an agent-based model to assess if the number of fatalities could have been reduced if a warning had been issued.
