This CIWEM Republic of Ireland branch hosted webinar will review aspects of urban nature-based solution case studies to illustrate how these projects can be used to create more resilient city spaces.

Our speakers will consider:

  • The use of successful SuDS to help areas to adapt to climate change.
  • City centre retrofit schemes.
  • The role of hydraulic modelling in developing effective nature-based solutions.
  • The importance of soil specification in hydraulic models when evaluating schemes.
  • Soil properties and pollution loadings on SuDS projects installed over several years.
  • Below ground challenges, such as buried utility infrastructure.
  • Testing regimes to back up models with real time data.
  • New build SuDS schemes and the opportunity to reduce downstream storage requirements.
  • Slowing peak run-off from building roof catchments.

About the speakers

Alwyn White

After starting his career in amenity horticulture, Alwyn White founded Greenleaf Ireland in 2003 to promote best practice tree planting and provide technical guidance to landscape architects, engineers and contractors. Drawing on his practical experience he has worked on a wide range of projects within Ireland to provide advice and solutions for long term landscape success.

John Stack

John Stack is a Chartered Engineer and a Senior Executive Engineer in Dublin City Council.While his primary focus is on Water Framework Directive compliance, he has a particular interest in the multi-benefit use of nature-based solutions, including stormwater management, both in terms flood control and water quality improvement, habitat enhancement, and for the development of social, recreational and amenity assets.He currently oversees the Water Framework Directive Section of the Protection of Water Bodies Office and is tasked with delivering projects aimed a complying with Water Framework Directive.

Anthony McCloy

Anthony McCloy is Director of McCloy Consulting, who specialise in sustainable drainage, flood risk, civil and geo-environmental consultancy. Anthony is nationally recognised for his contributions in SuDS and has contributed to National and Local Policy and authored Industry Guidance. Anthony has an ongoing involvement in design of innovative SuDS retrofit schemes, flood risk assessment, and has coordinated catchment scale hydraulic modelling studies.
