The second lunchtime presentation in the 2020/2021 technical programme, focusing on the CIWEM Northern Ireland branch’s theme of water and the environment, adapting to change will be given by Francis Mackin (RPS Belfast).
The talk will look at the importance of peatland conservation and management and its potential use as a nature-based method in the context of integrated catchment management. An outline of some of the key drivers for peatland restoration will be covered and we will explore the innovate techniques that are being applied across a range of peatlands in Ireland to deliver a healthier ecosystem.

Francis Mackin
Francis Mackin is a Senior Associate in the Water Environment division RPS in Belfast. He holds a degree in Environmental Management and Masters in Environmental Engineering from Queen’s University of Belfast. He is a Chartered Water and Environment Manager (C.WEM), a Chartered Scientist and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv).
Francis leads a team of engineers and scientists involved in the conservation and management of peatlands including raised bogs and blanket bogs across the island of Ireland. He has led the development of detailed hydrological restoration plans for a wide variety of peatland sites for clients including National Parks and Wildlife Service, the EU LIFE-funded Living Bog Project, Bord na Móna, BirdWatch Ireland, Ulster Wildlife.
