The CIWEM Republic of Ireland branch are delighted to welcome Leila Bowe and Helen Burke who will present this webinar about Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).

Leila Bowe won the CIWEM Republic of Ireland branch sponsored “Best Water Related Presentation” prize at the 2024 ESAI ENVIRON conference and will discuss an Irish case study of the River Liffey, looking at PFAS from source to sink.

Leila will be joined by her colleague Helen Burke, whose Doctoral research also focuses on PFAS. Helen will provide insights from her research on PFAS sample collection, extraction and analysis.

About the speakers

Leila Bowe

Leila Bowe graduated from University of New South Wales, Australia with a BEng. in Environmental Engineering in 2019. Leila has since worked in leading industry consultancies in Australia and Ireland, specialising in contaminated land and water management Leila is currently completing a MSc. in Environmental Chemistry by Research with the Dublin City University (DCU) Water Institute. Her research is part of an EPA-funded project on identifying sources, pathways and environmental risks associated with PFAS in Ireland

Helen Burke

Helen Burke graduated from DCU in 2022 with a BSc. in Environmental Science and Technology. Helen is currently carrying out PhD research as part of the EPA-funded INVEST pFASST project which aims to address the challenges posed by PFAS contamination in Ireland. Helen’s research is focused on establishing an analytical method to determine the concentration of target PFAS across a number of matrices to permit investigations of environmental PFAS trends.

This event is open to members and non-members of CIWEM. The webinar is hosted on the Zoom platform and will be recorded.
