Event description

The third in the digital series on climate action in Ireland hosted by the CIWEM Republic of Ireland branch. This webinar will examine phosphorous recovery and reuse from wastewater. It is customised for the water and agricultural industries interested in a sustainable cyclic economy.

The webinar endeavours to give attendee’s an introduction to the feasibility of recovering a marketable phosphorous product from wastewater streams using proven technologies in light of long-term strategies from key stakeholders in Ireland, such as Irish Water and Teagase Agriculture & Food Development Authority.

In consideration of current zero waste initiatives and striving for a circular economy aligning with the European Union’s (EU) “Farm to Fork Strategy” and “Green Deal” action plan towards a more resource-efficient and competitive economy, attendees will hear from the various stakeholders in Ireland and globally on the viability of reusing a waste stream to provide agriculture with a complimentary product to replace chemically produced additives.

About the chair and speakers

Chair | SM Ashekuzzaman PhD, MCIWEM

Our chair for this event is SM (Ashek) Ashekuzzaman, a research officer in soil and plant nutrition at Teagasc.

Dara White - Irish Water

Dara White has worked as a wastewater and water engineer for over 25 years, as a project manager, designer and more recently focusing on process design. He has worked as a consultant and as a contractor and he joined Irish Water when it was set up in 2014. His role in Irish Water is a wastewater treatment regional lead for asset strategy/planning where he has responsibility for the selection of treatment processes; evaluation of treatment levels and the assessment of sludge treatment and reuse requirements on the WWTW in the East Midlands region.Dara has been very involved in the Ringsend WWTW upgrade and the process selection and process proving of the Nereda process for meeting the stringent nutrient removal requirements of the RIngsend discharge which treats about 40% of Ireland’s wastewater.

Romain Lemaire - Veolia

PhD obtained in 2007 at the Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC), The University of Queensland, Australia on “Achieving High-Levels of Biological Nutrient Removal from Abattoir Wastewater using Sequencing Batch Reactors”. Worked at Veolia Water Research Centre in Paris for 3 years as research project manager on Biological Nutrient Removal and particularly on advanced N-removal processes such as Anammox, Aerobic granular sludge, Biofilm processes and also N2O greenhouse gas emission. Joined Veolia Technical & Business Support Department in 2011 as wastewater Expert for the development and industrialization of new biological processes. In charge of process validation and support for Business Units on Design & Build and Operation wastewater projects.

Dr Patrick Forrestal

Dr. Patrick Forrestal is a Senior Research Officer in the Crops, Land Use and Environment Programme of Teagasc, based at Johnstown Castle in Wexford, Ireland. Patrick grew up on a grassland and arable farm in Ireland. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Animal and Crop Production and Master’s degree in Crop Science from University College Dublin, Ireland. Patrick received his Ph.D training at University of Maryland, USA while working in the area of field crop nitrogen management. His research group focuses on plant, soil, and nutrient interactions including the agronomic and environmental performance of new mineral and bio-based recycled fertilisers and manures. He has published extensively with his team and is an active partner in several national, EU and international collaborative projects with researchers and industry.

Matt Kuzma

Matthew (Matt) Kuzma has dedicated his career to a focus on development, management, and commercialization of emerging technologies in the water & wastewater segment, with a specific interest in recovery of resources such as nutrients, energy, and water. Matt brings 25 years of experience in the global water/wastewater industry, primarily focused on advanced technologies such as membrane filtration & membrane bioreactors (applied for water reuse), nutrient recovery, anaerobic digestion (with energy recovery), and advanced biological wastewater processes. With a keen interest in travel as well as some time living abroad, markets served include North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, China, and the Middle East. Past experiences include work at USFilter, Veolia, Siemens Water Technologies (now Evoqua), Anaergia, Organica Water, and recently rejoining Ostara to lead their efforts in implementation of nutrient recovery projects globally. Matt has a B.S. in Engineering from Miami University, and currently resides in Southern California while working out of Ostara’s Vancouver (Canada) office. In addition to efforts at Ostara, ongoing work to support the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance (as a board delegate) and other forward-thinking organizations provides great opportunities to move the industry in a more sustainable direction.
