Hosted by the CIWEM Northern Ireland branch
Event description
Portadown was identified as a Significant Flood Risk Area (SFRA) in the first cycle Flood Risk Management Plan 2015-2021 for the Neagh Bann Integrated River Basin District and subsequently as an Area of Potential Significant Flood Risk (APSFR) in the second cycle Northern Ireland Flood Risk Management Plan 2021-2027.
The town has suffered from historical flooding on a regular basis, particularly over the last 30-40 years. Significant flood events were recorded in 1986, 1987, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015/16 and 2024. The frequency and extent of these events are expected to increase with the effects of climate change.
Amey Consulting was commissioned by DfI Rivers to deliver a scheme that will reduce the impact of fluvial flooding from the River Bann and some of its tributaries on properties in the Portadown area in the event of a 1% Annual Exceedance Probability Flood with allowances for climate change as per the current departmental guidance.
The scheme has identified 21 sites within the study area with c.10km of flood defences consisting of flood walls, embankments, flood gates, demountable barriers, flood resilience and flap valves.
The presentation will review the flood risk, optioneering/scheme development and the construction delivery programme.
All CIWEM members and non-members are welcome to attend this webinar.
