We invite you to attend our first Presidential fireside virtual chat and welcome Niki Roach as CIWEM's 34th President. This year’s Presidential Theme is ‘Everything is connected’.

2020 has shown us, perhaps more clearly than ever before, how connected we are. The year has also shown us how quickly change can happen. The possibilities to alter the course of some of our global environmental and social challenges are at our fingertips. Whilst we’re not in control of environmental systems, the way we choose to engage with them is within our gift to change. The human-derived processes and ultimately, silos, that we often build around environmental systems hold the key to these changes.

We recognise that even with our breadth of membership, we can’t tackle the biggest global challenges alone. Join us for an informal panel discussion with Niki Roach and other passionate leaders who are exploring ways we can work together and apply systems thinking to meet the opportunities and challenges of our time.

Fireside chat focus:

Interconnectedness is certainly not a new idea, da Vinci spoke of it in his ‘Principles for the development of a complete mind' but it’s John Muir, the 19th Century Scottish naturalist and ‘father of the US National Parks’ who seems to encapsulate our current challenges perfectly; “when we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe”.

Our aim is to work towards a safer, more sustainable world and our mission is to build a global community of water and environmental professionals dedicated to working for the public benefit. Inherently our members across the world work alongside and with natural systems in pursuit of this aim.

One of the unique aspects of CIWEM is our ability to create a community for a broad range of environmental and water professionals. We are equally a home for ecologists, engineers and environmentalists as we are for social scientists, geographers and the full spectrum of water related disciplines.

The discussion will focus on water systems primarily and showcase views and expertise from across the sector of positive examples of systems-thinking in action and where challenges to be overcome are still present. This discussion will build upon our Immediate Past President, David McHugh’s theme of the Climate and Ecological Emergency, by starting to look for practical steps that can be taken across our profession to deliver positive change.
