solutions for the water environment: Joining the dots
CIWEM invites you to join our 2022 virtual Presidential induction event. This year we welcome Steve Thompsett as CIWEM’s 36th President, and Emily Shipton as CIWEM’s Junior President.Contemporary challenges of climate change and nature decline are advancing rapidly (CIWEM declared a climate and nature emergency in 2019) and impacting many aspects of modern life. But the approaches and institutional frameworks that exist to manage these are rooted in siloed thinking and regulation precisely when we need something altogether more systemic in focus.
As we witness flooding, drought, heatwaves, wildfires, storms, pollution and species loss of unprecedented scale and pace, we need to rethink the way we manage and regulate water and the wider environment across society and the economy. Incoming President Steve Thompsett will chair a panel discussion, reaching across CIWEM’s branches, groups and panels to pose questions including:
- How can we drive more join-up across regulatory frameworks?
- How can we link the experience and needs of different sectors into integrated approaches and effective partnership working?
- Where should CIWEM be focusing our attention to support the necessary change?
- Where should we be reaching out externally to learn, share and collaborate for change?
This event also serves as an opportunity to thank the 2021/22 President Professor Nicholas Howden and Junior President Matthew Jack for the stellar work they have done and all that that they have achieved within their Presidential term. Nicholas and Matthew will also be presenting the 2022 CIWEM President's award and Junior President's award.
