Event description

During this lunch and learn you will hear from three individuals in the urban drainage industry who have gone through the process of reaching chartered engineer, and two individuals who are interview panellists from the urban drainage industry

The speakers will talk through their personal experience of the Chartership final interview, how they prepared, how it went and how they felt afterwards.

The two that are interview panellists will talk through common themes of where individuals have struggled in their interview, what they look for in the application and what areas they would suggest people focus on before going for their interview.

CIWEM members and non-members are welcome to attend this webinar.

About the speakers

James Hale

James Hale is the CIWEM Urban Drainage Group committee Chair and a long-standing member within the wastewater industry. James currently works on implementing smart sewer options throughout the UK and has previously been involved in developing new processes and approaches in wastewater modelling and asset management for a variety of water companies.

Margaret Devenport

Margaret Devenport works in Severn Trent within the Chief Engineer department. She has 20 years' experience in the urban drainage industry and has been a CIWEM assessor and reviewer for over five years.

Rebecca McLean

Rebecca McLean has worked for Severn Trent for 10 years, with the majority of this time spent working on Wastewater Strategy in the Drainage and Wastewater Management Planning (DWMP) Team. Following her work on the Cycle 1 DWMP and experience of the PR24 business plan development, she successfully became a chartered CIWEM member in April 2024. This experience and professional chartership helped her to secure her current role as Severn Trent’s DWMP Manager in January 2025 in which she is enjoying the challenge of delivering Cycle 2 of DWMP.

Sony George

Sony George is a Wastewater Modeller with AtkinsRéalis, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering from IIT, Bombay in 2014. Sony has around 10 years’ experience in Wastewater Modelling, specialising in climate change adaptation and sustainable solutions for various water companies across United Kingdom and Ireland. She attained the professional milestone of becoming Chartered with CIWEM in June 2024. Sony currently is a Project Manager as well as a senior lead delivering NI Water and Uisce Éireann projects.

Nicola Graham

Nicola is a Principal Network Modeller at Binnies with over 20 years of experience in the water and environmental sector. Specialising in urban drainage modelling, she delivers major projects across the UK and internationally. She became a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (C.WEM) in September 2023 and continues to be an active member of the CIWEM community.

As current Chair of the CIWEM Urban Drainage New Member’s Group, Nicola is passionate about professional development and takes pride in helping early-career professionals progress towards chartership and achieve their career goals.

This event is open to members and non-members of CIWEM. The webinar is hosted on the Zoom platform and will be recorded.
