Hosted by the CIWEM North Western & North Wales branch
Event description
In August 2019 the auxiliary spillway at Toddbrook reservoir overflowed and failed. This was a major incident requiring evacuation of the residents of Whaley Bridge whilst emergency repairs were carried out to the dam. Arup has been working with the Canal & River Trust and their contractor to design repair works at Toddbrook Reservoir.
This webinar will highlight the key influences and considerations behind the design of the replacement spillway system and associated works to improve reservoir safety. The reservoir is situated on the outskirts of the town of Whaley Bridge in an area of historic mining and is now surrounded by development and parkland that is highly valued by the local community. Also it is a designated SSSI. These constraints affected where the spillway could be located and required careful design to respond to matters raised during public consultation.
An Environmental Impact Assessment and engagement with key stakeholders were key to obtaining planning approval in Spring 2022. The design is now complete and being constructed, due for completion in 2024.
Following the presentations, there will be a Q&A session.
This event is open to CIWEM members and non-members.
