02 March 2020
The CIWEM South Western branch invites you to a sealed tour of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.
Hinkley Point C (HPC) in Somerset is the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK in over 20 years. It is one of the largest and most complex projects in Europe and will take 10 years to complete. Construction started in 2016, and there are currently over 4,500 workers on site.
The UK EPR being constructed at Hinkley Point C, is a type of Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR). The design of the UK EPR’s that will be built at HPC represents a major development on previous pressurised water reactors, making them amongst the safest and most efficient civil nuclear power generators ever designed. The design basis for HPC ensures that the proposed plant is secure against natural hazards that have a frequency of less than one in 10,000 years. These hazards include tides, storm surges and tsunami as isolated and in-combination events. The planned twin unit UK EPR is capable of generating 3,260MW of secure, low carbon electricity for 60 years for around 6 million homes.
In addition to the tour there will be a presentation given by Phil Kruse, Environmental Technical Manager, followed by a Q&A session.
Please see the itinerary for full details.
