Untreated wastewater discharges from wastewater treatment plants have come under increasing scrutiny in recent times with much of the focus being placed on aesthetics and waterborne illnesses, however another issue is nutrient pollution leading to eutrophication and so affecting wildlife in the affected waterbody. Subsequently the waterbody classification may be adversely affected under Water Framework Directive legislation.

CIWEM's president, Steve Thompsett, is a veteran of consultancy in the environmental sector and with the water industrry. He will discuss the efforts that the water industry is making towards improving resilience in relation to flood and coastal risk which will in turn affect wastewater discharges and thus nutrient input to waterbodies in the environment.
