6 week short course description

Anaerobic wastewater treatment is one of the most energy-efficient technologies for treating wastewater. With minimal energy requirements and the conversion of organic pollutants into renewable energy-rich biogas, there’s a double energy gain – a serious benefit both for now and in the future.

In this course you will learn about this state-of-the-art technology from anaerobic experts. You will also develop your skills in anaerobic reactor design and operation to better handle the current environmental challenges and global energy crisis.

After taking this course, you will not only understand the potentials of the system but also how to make process designs, evaluate anaerobic treatment processes, and operate high-rate anaerobic reactors efficiently.

Course starts 22 January 2025.

Course length: 6 weeks. Estimated effort: 4-5 hours per week.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts and advantages of high-rate anaerobic treatment
  • Make a mass balance over you anaerobic reactor and calculate the methane production potential based on the residual water characteristics
  • Recognize the key factors affecting high-rate anaerobic treatment
  • Identify the development and the key features of high-rate anaerobic reactors, and identify the challenges and potentials for a specific high-rate anaerobic technology
  • Acquire the ability to design upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors under specific conditions, and identify the procedures needed to start-up UASB reactors with low grade seed material
  • Identify the most important anaerobic laboratory tests, acquire the theoretical knowledge to assess the maximum capacity of anaerobic sludge, and the biomethane or toxicity potential of waste(waters)
  • Recognize the current application of high-rate anaerobic treatment technologies in practice.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and attendance will contribute toward your continuing professional development (CPD). Participants who successfully complete this course will earn a professional education certificate and will be eligible to receive 3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). 1 CEU corresponds to a study load of 10 hours

Meet the course team

  • Jules van Lier is professor Wastewater Treatment / Environmental Engineering and Head of the Section Sanitary Engineering at Delft University of Technology. Jules van Lier accomplished his PhD on Thermophilic Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment in 1995, under the supervision of Prof. Gatze Lettinga at Wageningen University.Throughout his career, he has been involved as a senior researcher / project manager in various national and international research projects, working on cost-effective water treatment for resource recovery (water, nutrients, biogas, elements). His research projects are focused on closing water cycles in industries and sewage water recovery for irrigated agriculture.Jules is an experienced lecturer, specialized in anaerobic wastewater treatment courses since 1993. While holding teaching positions at Wageningen University, TU Delft and IHE Institute for Water Education, in the Netherlands, he organized and led week-long courses globally. In 2014 he developed the first MOOC on the edX platform which received two awards.
  • Julian Muñoz Sierra has been a bioprocess designer in environmental biotechnology (EngD) and researcher (PhD) at Delft University of Technology since 2010, specializing in novel wastewater treatment and high-rate anaerobic reactor systems. He started the development and coordination of the course High-rate Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment.Julian was the lead researcher on the BioXtreme project, looking at a new niche for applying Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors treating chemical industrial wastewater streams under extreme conditions. This project was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Jules van Lier and involved collaboration with Evides Industrie Water B.V and Paques B.V.Julian has been a teaching assistant for BSc and MSc courses, such as biological wastewater treatment and fundamentals of biotechnology. He has also lectured in workshops/seminars on industrial wastewater and supervised BSc and MSc thesis projects, internship projects, and laboratory practice.
  • Zhe Deng is a PhD researcher in Sanitary Engineering, Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Delft University of Technology. Her PhD project is focusing on anaerobic treatment of protein-rich industrial wastewaters, such as slaughterhouse wastewater and dairy wastewater, and the bottleneck of anaerobic protein degradation is being investigated. The research involved both fundamental laboratory work and advanced bioinformatics data analysis. The project is collaborated with Biothane Veolia and supervised by Prof. Jules van Lier and Associate Prof. Henri Spanjers.In 2015, Zhe obtained her Msc degree in Sanitary Engineering, TU Delft. She has a solid background in water management and water treatment, as well as a systematic understanding of anaerobic digestion. Her research interest lies in anaerobic digestion of industrial wastewaters, especially regarding the resources recovery from wastes.Zhe has tutored undergraduates in sanitary engineering practical courses in 2012 and supervised postgraduates in water treatment courses and graduation projects during 2018-2020.Currently, she is working as an assistant of the course High-Rate Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment.
