CIWEM Tyne and Humber Branch invites you to this evening talk highlighting international activities which are beginning to shift perspectives and practices around the treatment of 'waste'. Delegates are invited to consider how the exploitation of solid and aqueous 'wastes' is challenging our understanding of the word 'waste'.
It has become apparent that there is no longer any 'waste'. Discarded, overlooked and emitted solid and liquid 'wastes' are simply 'wasted' resources. All professionals (except perhaps highway engineers) know this and should therefore be striving to exploit these resources.
Ideally, exploitation of so-called 'waste' should take place as close as possible to the point at which this waste is created, in order to minimise transport impacts. However, there are many challenges yet to be overcome with regards to shifting from the 'waste' stream culture to a resource culture. The shift requires not only a chagne in vision but also a new and better integrated approach to the institutionalised separation and handling of solid, surface water and blackwater 'waste'.
Our speaker for this evening event is Professor Richard Ashley, Emeritus Professor of Urban Water at the University of Sheffield and Director of EcoFutures Ltd.Book now
