The first of a series of early career discussions hosted by the CIWEM Urban Drainage Group new members’ group.

Each webinar will show case different career profiles, with speakers providing some case studies of projects they have undertaken, as well as telling us about their career defining moments and why they decided to follow the career path they are on.

Our speaker for this session will be Dr Karen Murrell, who is a principal consultant at WRc and leads the environmental modelling business.

About the speaker

Dr Karen Murrell

Dr Karen Murell is a Principal Consultant at WRc responsible for leading the Environmental Modelling business.

Dr Karen has a career spanning 30 years, with significant involvement in key water industry guidance including the Urban Pollution Management (UPM) Procedure with responsibility for drafting the river modelling guidance, as well as other guidance.

Dr Karen directed the recent development to incorporate the supply and resource representation within SIMPOL ICM which now has the functionality to represent the whole of the human water cycle. This is of key importance as the industry moves to consider whole systems analysis as it begins to see the importance of understanding the complex interactions within our catchments.

For many years’ Dr Karen has provided training in the use of water quality models for urban and rural pollution management including over 100 Environment Agency staff in the use of industry standard SIMCAT software.

Dr Karen has undertaken marine dispersion model auditing for NIEA during the past 15 years where her expertise has given assurance to the NIEA that schemes have been investigated using the appropriate tools and data.

Dr Karen’s is the key contact for catchment modelling at WRc and directs, or act as specialist project adviser, for all modelling projects delivered by the Company. She is also responsible for bid preparation and providing the technical expert input to client sales meetings where WRc maybe pitching for a piece of work or discussing a concept for further research or development..
