CIWEM - UDG Training Day - Spring 2026

Storm Overflow Spill reduction – Tackling storm overflows, as part of WINEP, with non-traditional solutions: examples and lessons learnt from applying alternative solutions to grey solutions.

Between 2025 and 2030 c.£10bn will be invested in reducing the frequency with which storm overflows operate in England & Wales. Traditional solutions of storage and upsizing of assets is giving way to the desire to deliver environmentally friendly sustainable green solutions. But how ready are we as industry to deliver these types of solutions with the certainty that is required to achieve the outcomes?

This years CIWEM UDG training day is focusing on the non-traditional solutions to storm overflows, you will not only hear about the challenges and opportunities gained from these types of solutions but learn how we implement these solutions in line with the regulatory requirements necessary to align to the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) and Ofwat’s expectations for delivering efficient solutions for customers.

Specific learning outcomes

  • Awareness of the range of solutions being considered to address storms spills.

  • The technical challenges associated with these types of solutions, such as evidencing and demonstrating achievement of performance objectives as well as how options are demonstrated as cost efficient.

  • Appreciation of key aspects of terminology in respect of WINEP, Ofwat guidelines such as Price Control Deliverables (PCD), Equivalent Storage, testing solutions against SODRP targets as well as Short Term Spill Frequency Threshold permitting.

  • We also touch on aspects of how the solutions will be monitored for alignment with required levels of performance such as EDM returns and SOAF.

  • You will be able to take learning and knowledge that will help you and your business to better understand the challenges of efficiently, sustainably delivering environmental improvements.
