CIWEM Welsh branch and CIWEM Rivers and Coastal group invite you to a study day exploring the challenges of delivering flood and coastal risk management in a dynamic coastal environment. This is one of a series of joint events with CIWEM branches to celebrate CIWEM Rivers and Coastal group’s 70th anniversary.
The study day will include morning and afternoon sessions with presentations from speakers from Natural Resources Wales, Cfoeth Naturiol Cymru and JBA Consulting, as well as site visits to the local schemes discussed.
Greenpark weir exists to impound water in the River Afan which feeds Port Talbot dock, providing water vital for dock operations and the adjacent Tata Steel works. This presentation will identify some of the key challenges faced, such as floods, droughts and inundation from the sea, whilst maintaining fish passage and water supply for all users. Through long-term partnership with the Lower Afan Water Management Group, the project team realised their aspirations to provide sustainability, environmental, and community benefits. Learn how the weir forms part of wider improvements on the Afan, supporting a resurgent ecosystem and providing a rich resource enhancing its communities.
Learn about the challenges of sand dune management in flood risk management and the Aberavon Promenade Coastal Risk Management Scheme, which is a maintenance and repair scheme being undertaken by Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council. This talk will provide a summary of the overall scheme, identifying the wider benefits it aims to achieve and discussing the issues faced with regard to planning and acquisition of marine licences.
