Event description

Are you new to the water or environmental management profession with something to share? Whether you’re working on new research or engineering practices on projects, the joint CIWEM West Midlands and East Midlands branches’ Dr Jenkins competition is your opportunity to gain valuable experience by publishing and presenting a paper. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. CIWEM Members are asked to seek out, encourage and sponsor potential authors.

Call for papers

The competition is open to all but preference will be given to those with limited experience in presenting or publishing papers.

Candidates should notify their interest with Stefan Fidlschuster at Stefan.Fidlschuster@stservices.co.uk as soon as possible and then submit their paper by 17 January 2020.

A panel will select the papers for presentation and will notify its decision by 27 January 2020 to all those who have submitted abstracts.

The papers selected for presentation should be submitted to Stefan Fidlschuster by 19 February 2020 at the latest, they should be about 1500 words, no longer than 2000 words, and may contain graphs and diagrams.

The presentations and written papers will be judged at an evening meeting of CIWEM at WSP offices at The Mailbox, Wharfside St, Birmingham, B1 1RQ on 26 February 2020 and the prizes presented. Please note that judging will take account of the content and quality of both the written papers and the presentations.

Papers not shortlisted for presentation will have the opportunity to be presented as a poster during the evening event.

For full details about the competition rules and programme please view the Dr Jenkins competition guidelines.

Further information

Dr S H Jenkins was Chemist to the Upper Tame Main Drainage Authority and became a member of one of CIWEM’s predecessor intuitions in 1938, then a Fellow in 1944 and served as President in 1957. Throughout his career Dr Jenkins was active in his local branch and gave great encouragement to younger people in the water industry. He died in January 1983. To commemorate and continue his support, this annual paper competition was established to provide a forum for young authors to promote their work and practice their presentation skills.
