The Young Environmentalist of the Year Award

The Young Environmentalist of the Year Award, sponsored by Jacobs, recognises exceptional contribution to environmental understanding by top professional under thirty.

CIWEM is delighted to announce that Dr Alex Nicholson has received the 2015 Young Environmentalist of the Year Award. Alex, an Environmental Engineer at international consultancy Arup, completed a PhD in Natural Flood Management at Newcastle University, and has continued to develop and champion Natural Flood Management from within Arup. Alex has been involved in a long-term part time secondment to the Environment Agency, in addition to developing and delivering an assessment tool, design guide and training courses with organisations including Natural Resources Wales and the River Restoration Centre.

Alex said: “I am absolutely delighted with the news of this award. Not only does it recognise my contributions to environmental research, but it also adds endorsement to the field of Natural Flood Management. I really enjoyed the assessment day – I’d like to thank CIWEM for the opportunity to present at this competition, colleagues at Arup for their support throughout the process, and Jacobs for generously sponsoring the award.”

The judging panel comprised of Nigel Hendley, CIWEM Chief Executive, Alastair Chisholm, Head of Policy and Communications at CIWEM and Mark Etheridge, Executive Director of Operations at Jacobs.

Alex demonstrated technical excellence and dedication, going above and beyond in his role at Arup to further the science of Natural Flood Management.
