Wastewater and Biosolids Network

Our Wastewater and Biosolids Network provides a focal point within CIWEM for expertise in the field of wastewater management and is a forum for valuable discussion, debate, knowledge sharing and advice. Members of the Network are drawn from government, regulators, water companies, consultants, research organisations and others. At present, the Network meets three times annually.

Wastewater management is defined as the collection (excluding the fabric of the infrastructure) and treatment of municipal and industrial waste water, and the treatment and disposal or use of the products of these processes, in accordance with environmental standards. To view CIWEM’s work in this area please visit the processed water and waste and resources pages.

Role and remit

The Network assists with a number of outputs including events, consultation responses, policy statements, technical advice, representation and publications. Its Steering Group meets three times a year and members are in frequent contact via e-mail:

  • To keep development in the field of wastewater management under review and to provide technical advice to CIWEM.
  • To identify developing topics and to anticipate requests to CIWEM for comments, in relation to wastewater management.
  • To assist in preparing Policy Position Statements.
  • To assist CIWEM to respond in a competent and authoritative manner to requests from government departments and other bodies for evidence in response to consultation papers and enquiries. To identify consultation papers in advance and assist CIWEM in planning responses which may involve several technical panels.
  • To identify topics within the areas of wastewater management which would be appropriate subjects for conferences, symposia, publications and education and training activities.
  • To identify and utilise the expertise of other members of CIWEM in the area of Wastewater management as necessary.
  • To promote the Institution’s interests in this field with other organisations.
  • To liaise with other CIWEM networks in areas of common interest.

If you would be interested in joining the panel, or to find out more, please email the policy team with a copy of your CV or career statement.
