Arup among selected UK nominators for 2022 Earthshot Prize – open now

The Earthshot Prize 2022 is open for entries, and the search is on to find the next cohort of ground-breaking eco-innovators, with five winners awarded £1 million worth of funding each.

Professional-services firm Arup is among 327 pre-selected nominators – which span across not-for-profit, foundation, investment, corporate, academic, governmental and community-led organisations – from 80 countries who have until March 4th to submit their candidates of choice for the second edition of the prize.

“We are at a pivotal moment in climate change conversations,” Arup Global Water leader Mark Fletcher told CIWEM.

“I am delighted that Arup continues to support this fundamentally important change initiative in our role as a Global Alliance member. In the wake of COP26, now is the time to find ways in which we can mitigate the causes, adapt to the impacts and build resilience to climate change for communities, places and critical infrastructure: enacting positive change for water, nature and climate, for the benefit of our current and future generations.”

Arup joins a roll-call of UK-based nominators including climate-change charity Ashden, the African Conservation Foundation, venture capital group 2150 and the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL).

The 2022 Earthshot Prize is seeking nominations in the following areas: personal transportation, regenerative agriculture, future-fit buildings, and extending the life of fashion, food and plastic products.

Within the above it will prioritise: Indigenous, and women-led solutions, Web3.0 enabled solutions, nominations that unlock new financial models which value nature, and finally, wild cards the out-of-the-box, blue-sky solutions that have transformative impact potential.

On this year’s competition Earth Prize founder and council member Prince William said: “The 2021 winners and finalists have set the bar incredibly high. As the nominations for 2022 open, I can’t wait to see what solutions the Prize helps to champion this coming year.

“In 2022, we are determined to go further by seeking even more nominations from every corner of the world, ensuring that we spotlight and scale the very best ideas and innovations that will put our planet on a sustainable path and protect our world for generations to come.”

Winners will be decided from a list of finalists by The Earthshot Prize Council, which comprises leading figures from across a number of sectors – including the environmental sector. Among them are Sir David Attenborough, popstar Shakira, also known for her campaiging on conservation issues, and Costa Rican diplomat Christiana Figueres.

Last year's award ceremony took place in London and a different host city for the competition will be chosen each year between 2021 and 2030.
