The International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) have recently announced that they have recognised member Norman Howell for his long-term involvement, technical and professional contribution to the Global Pipeline Industry with the award of an ISTT Fellowship.
This international recognition follows two other major awards that honoured Norman’s work in trenchless technology and the pipeline industry. In 2018 he became only the third person to be presented with the United Kingdom Society for Trenchless Technology Lifetime Achievement Award and in the same year he was also received Honorary Life Membership of the Pipeline Industries Guild.
Norman graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1975 with a degree in Applied Geology and later qualified as a Chartered Geologist, Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Water and Environmental Manager. He has been a member of CIWEM since 1990 and is currently an independent technical consultant having previously held senior management roles at Tarmac Construction, D J Ryan & Sons Ltd and Subterra Ltd.
He has been involved in the civil engineering and pipeline sectors of the construction industry for over 45 years and has had a pivotal role in the development and introduction of new innovative trenchless techniques that have revolutionised the installation and rehabilitation of pipelines. These systems have been adopted around the world and provide a more sustainable cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional pipeline installation and repair in open trenches.
He has been an active member of the UKSTT and Pipeline Industries Guild for many years and has served as a board member and chair of both organisations. In addition, he has been a member of the ISTT board for eight years which includes a six-year stint as a member of their executive subcommittee. He is passionate about nurturing and inspiring developing professionals and to provide them with opportunities to gain skills and knowledge to progress their careers.
He was instrumental in establishing the Pipeline Industries Guild Annual Conference an event that is focussed towards developing professionals affording them the opportunity to participate in a major conference and meet senior industry figures.
Norman has presented numerous technical papers at both UK and International Conferences on a variety of subjects relating Trenchless Technology and he has been a guest lecturer at Manchester Business School and the University of East London.
Commenting on his ISTT Fellow award Norman said: “I am truly delighted and honoured to be the recipient of an ISTT Fellowship and have my contribution to the development of trenchless technology throughout the world recognised in this way. In a career spanning more than 45 years it has been my passion to develop trenchless methods to provide more sustainable and cost-effective ways to repair and install pipeline infrastructure.
"I have not only enjoyed the work but it has given me the opportunity to meet with many other like-minded engineers and forge long lasting friendships. It is a privilege to work within such a forward looking and innovative industry.”
