CIWEM receives Planet Mark certification

As the leading chartered professional body for water and environmental professionals, we understand the importance of walking the walk when it comes to sustainability.

We are excited to announce that we have received our Year 1 Planet Mark certification, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards carbon neutrality.

In 2019, CIWEM declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency, committing to review our operations to align with our belief that every stakeholder must engage with climate action. As part of this commitment, we set a bold goal to become Carbon Neutral by 2030 and joined the Pledge to Net Zero initiative to motivate and inspire both ourselves and others.

After years of gathering data and making transformative changes to our structure, we are now proud to publicly report on our carbon footprint and the steps we are taking to limit our negative impact. The first year of certification to The Planet Mark is based on our commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in our business operations by measuring and reducing our carbon footprint and engaging our stakeholders.

Our carbon footprint reflects our operational emissions from our Saffron Hill office, including activities such as electricity usage, business travel, our magazine and waste management.

We are actively implementing strategies to further reduce our environmental impact, including:

  • Renewable Energy: We are procuring renewable electricity, which significantly lowers our market-based emissions.
  • Water and Waste Management: Implementing water and electricity-saving solutions in our office.
  • Event Sustainability: Our conferences, like Flood and Coast, now include sustainability assessments to reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Print Reduction: Transitioning The Environment magazine to quarterly print issues with monthly online editions, aiming to save approximately 5 tonnes of CO2e annually.

Our ongoing efforts include setting science-based targets to reduce our carbon emissions by 42% by 2030, aligned with the global objective to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C. We aim to reduce our scope 3 emissions by at least 90%, complemented by offsetting any residual emissions.

We are committed to continuous improvement in sustainability, engaging our stakeholders, and transparently reporting our progress. This certification is a testament to our dedication to achieving our goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.
