Jamie Margetts' Bursary in Urban Drainage Engineering awarded for research into SuDS retrofit opportunities in South Wales

Eleanor Maxfield awarded Margetts Bursary for research into SuDS retrofit opportunities in South Wales

The Margetts Bursary in Urban Drainage Engineering is sponsored by CIWEM and RPS . It recognises the significant contributions made by Jamie Margetts (late Chair of CIWEM’s Urban Drainage Group) in the field of urban drainage engineering. The bursary offers £3000 pounds to a winning candidate each year and is open internationally.

This year, CIWEM and RPS have awarded the Margetts Bursary to Eleanor Maxfield to support her MSc in Flood and Coastal Engineering at Brunel University. This MSc course has been developed by the Environment Agency with HR Wallingford to address the increasing demand for innovative professionals within the sector and targets the most current science, policy and techniques.

Eleanor’s MSc dissertation will be specialising in the field of urban drainage, in particular, focusing on SuDS retrofit opportunities in South Wales. Her approach will broach a range of scales, from opportunities mapping across local authority sites, to the detailed design of a new case study to bridge gaps in current understanding and available data.

Eleanor will be looking to identify, monitor and validate tangible benefits for water quality and flooding using strategic SUDS retrofit. She will be working with experienced urban drainage professionals from HR Wallingford and the CIWEM Urban Drainage Group (UDG) to complete her research.

Eleanor commented,

“The Margetts Bursary will play a key role by providing funding support for my MSc qualification and my focused urban drainage dissertation topic. Without such support it would be difficult to achieve my goal and consequently I am extremely grateful to have the support of CIWEM and RPS, and their encouragement that goals in professional development should be supported at whatever stage in your career. “
