Platinum Jubilee to feature children’s aspirations for the planet in 'River of Hope' procession

The full programme for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations have been announced. And while a line-up of entertainment acts, street parties and special services will come as no surprise to many, a focus on the planet as part of the Platinum Pageant is probably less expected.

Taking place on Sunday June 5th the pageant will feature a ‘River of Hope’ section made up of 200 flags appearing like a moving river as it proceeds down The Mall.

Primary and secondary school children are invited to create a picture of their hopes and aspirations for the planet over the next 70 years. A selection will then be transferred onto silk flags and carried by secondary school pupils.

Schools can visit riverofhope.co.uk to register their interest and receive step-by-step guides on how to create beautiful digital artwork with their students.

Teachers are encouraged to introduce the Sustainable Development Global Goals (SDGs) and climate change subject areas such as the impacts of river pollution on a river’s ecosystem as they work with students to create their River of Hope artwork.

Elsewhere in another important nod to the environment it’s been announced that the Queen’s Green Canopy programme will continue this year.

The unique tree-planting initiative created to mark the Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and calling on everyone from individuals to counties to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” will commence at the start of the official planting season in October 2022 and continue until the end of the Jubilee Year.

Planted trees can then be pinned to the Queen's Green Canopy virtual map.
