New Report highlights the need to adapt our coast to future challenges

CIWEM’s latest report highlights the challenges and opportunities our coasts face. Climate change is supercharging storms, with coastal surges breaking records and sea-level rise now having an undeniable impact. At the same time, coastal defence infrastructure is aging, budgets to maintain them are stretched and the mechanism for funding new schemes is inflexible. We need new ways to manage and adapt to our changing coastline. It’s an opportunity to face the reality of accelerating coastal change and develop a positive future for our coasts – one that gives more space to humans and wildlife, that encourages regeneration, and offers a vibrant place for communities.

“We cannot go on as we always have been.
We cannot hold back the tides and it’s time for more honest conversations about that with ourselves, with our politicians and with our coastal communities.”
Mark Stratton, CIWEM FCERM Panel chair and Coastal Policy Environment
& Research Team Service Manager, Coastal Partners

We’ve gathered “Postcards” from across the UK and further. Coastal risk management professionals share their situations, challenges, lessons learned and hopes. Read about the breadth of experiences across the coastal community, through an array of geographical, socio-economic and policy differences, past and present, and changing environmental pressures.

Front page of the ReportThese postcards have informed a series of ten recommendations our experts believe are needed to address the risks our coasts face. These include more flexible, pooled funding that supports coastal adaptation; shoreline management plans with more teeth; and a national policy statement for the UK’s coast with cross-party and cross-departmental backing to drive a vibrant, community-centred future for our coasts.
