In her new book, CIWEM Honorary Fellow and flooding expert, Mary Long-Dhonau OBE, shares experiences and inspirational stories about property flood resilient adaptations to enable quick recovery.
The impact of flooding is devastating. Climate changes means that flooding is more likely to occur, and more properties are at risk of flooding. Taking steps to adapt means recovery can be quick following any future flood event, minimising the time people are forced to leave their homes.
In Property Flood Resilience, Mary shares stories from homes and business who have made adaptations to help them recover more quickly after a flood. This shared experience informs and inspires those newly flooded when they think about flood resilient and recoverable repair.
Property flood resilient adaptations make a huge difference to recovery. The book is full of inspirational stories of both homeowners and businesses who have "Built Back Better" to enable them to recover quickly after being flooded. With a focus on the River Severn, it contains practical steps that individuals can take to reduce the severity of future flood events.
Mary’s experience of being flooded has driven her work in flood risk management, and she works in partnership with local authorities, the Environment Agency, FloodRe and insurance companies on flood awareness, resilience and recovery projects.
