Women claim all categories in UNEP 2021 Champions of the Earth award

Women have scooped all categories in the UNEP 2021 Champions of the Earth award the UN’s highest environmental honour.

Recognising some of the world’s most dynamic environmental leaders since it debuted in 2005, this year's award celebrates laureates in the four categories of Inspiration and Action, Policy Leadership, Entrepreneurial Vision, and Science and Innovation.

On the accolade, which this year received a record number of nominations from across the globe, UNEP executive director Inger Andersen said: “As we enter into a decisive decade, to cut emissions and protect and restore ecosystems, UNEP’s Champions of the Earth demonstrate that all of us can contribute. Every single act for nature counts. The entire spectrum of humanity has both a global responsibility and a profound opportunity.

“This year’s Champions are women who not only inspire us, but also remind us that we have in our hands the solutions, the knowledge and the technology to limit climate change and avoid ecological collapse.”

To date the UNEP Champions of the Earth has been awarded to 101 laureates, including 25 world leaders, 62 individuals and 14 organisations.

We learn more about the 2021 awardees below.

Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka (Science and Innovation)

Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka was the first wildlife veterinarian of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and is a recognised world authority on primates and zoonotic diseases. Kalema-Zikusoka examined the emergence of diseases in gorillas and what this and other infectious diseases mean for great apes and humans.

As the CEO and founder of Conservations Through public Health (CTPH), she leads the implementation of three integrated strategic programs: Wildlife Conservation, Community Health and Alternative Livelihoods.

She says: "We need more local champions, because these are the people who will become decision-makers for their communities and countries.”

Maria Kolesnikova (Entrepreneurial Vision)

Maria Kolesnikova is an environmental activist, youth advocate and head of MoveGreen, an organisation working to monitor and improve air quality in the central Asia region.

Through the ‘School Breathes Easily’ initiative, sensors installed in schools help teachers assess whether it’s safe for children to play outside and educate them about the impacts of air pollution.

She says: “Someone has to take responsibility for the future. Why shouldn’t it be me?” “Air pollution doesn't know borders.”

Sea Women of Melanesia (Inspiration and Action)

The Sea Women of Melanesia (SWoM) are a group of women biologists training local women to monitor and assess the impacts of widespread coral bleaching on some of the world's most endangered reefs in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Through scuba diving and marine science skills using underwater cameras and GPS technology, and building off their Indigenous knowledge, the women help protect and create new marine areas and reserves.

They say: "Conservation and environment protection is everyone's business. At the end of the day, we're trying to make this world a better place for all of us to live in.”

Prime Minister Mia Mottley (Policy leadership)

Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados is a leading advocate constantly raising the alarm about the vulnerability of islanders due to the climate emergency and the dangerous consequences for Small Island Developing States.

Under her leadership, Barbados has adopted increasingly ambitious renew ableenergy targets, while implementing clean energy transformation across the country, committing to a fossil-fuel free electricity sector and transport by 2030.

She says: "We have to protect the most vulnerable of our people and in doing so, pay it forward to the next generation.”
