Course Overview

This module caters for individuals who seek a greater knowledge and understanding of the wastewater treatment processes as well as those seeking to improve their skills in operating and maintaining the processes. Following a brief introduction of the regulatory framework, and the characteristics of wastewater and pollution, the module explores the key stages of municipal wastewater treatment. Operating principles of the major processes are examined along with the factors affecting their performance.

Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you will have obtained knowledge of:

  • Regulatory framework and performance measures – hydraulic and organic loadings; population equivalent
  • Preliminary treatment – storm water separation, grit and screenings removal
  • Primary Treatment – purpose and operation, operational problems, sludge management
  • Secondary Treatment – fixed film and activated sludge processes, key operating parameters, membrane bioreactor
  • Nutrient removal – chemical and biological phosphorus removal, nitrification and de-nitrification
  • Tertiary wastewater treatment processes and Small Wastewater Treatment Works

Course Delivery & Duration

Delivered via the CIWEM Learning Platform, the course is self paced e-learning with tutor support available on the course discussion forum throughout. Study at your own pace and access support when you require it. There are two live Q&A sessions incorporated into the course.

This course has a learning time equivalent to 3 hours per week for 15 weeks. You will have twenty weeks to complete the course including approximately fifteen weeks to read through course content and five weeks to complete their final assignment. In total delegates will have five months access to the Online Course portal. Please note this is a guideline and learning times will vary person to person.
