Sludge Treatment and Management (8 Hour)
Following a brief review of the removal of pollution from
wastewaters and the consequent production of primary and secondary
sludges, this unit examines the characteristics of industrial and
municipal sewage sludges and the options available for subsequent
treatment and reuse. Sludge removal and consolidation,
conditioning, anaerobic (and aerobic) digestion, mechanical
dewatering, thermal drying and incineration are explained and
discussed together with advanced sludge treatment (AST) options,
including pyrolysis and gasification. Combined heat and power and
energy from waste issues are also dealt with together with a
particular emphasis on land application of stabilised sludges for
agriculture, horticulture and reclamation uses. The unit also
reviews the relevant UK legislative and regulatory framework
relating to sewage sludge management/reuse.
